Start your group’s itinerary with a half day or more exploring Tavistock itself. This utterly enchanting and award-winning Devon market town, on the fringes of
Dartmoor National Park, boasts the historic
Guildhall and
Pannier Market at its heart, a bustling high street packed with independent shops, and plenty of places for visitors to enjoy the delicacies of area. You could munch on traditional local pasty or enjoy a classic Devonshire Cream Tea – with cream first, of course! In fact, Tavistock is thought to be the birthplace of the cream tea with it originating at the ancient Tavistock Abbey whereby monks would offer passing travellers bread with ‘clowted’ cream and a jam-like fruity preserve.
Next up, a trip to
Dartmoor is a must. With such a vast landscape, we recommend at least a day spent traversing the dynamic moorland. Reservoirs, towering tors and whimsical woodlands can all be explored here, plus a number of quint towns and villages dotted around the moors offer a place for respite and a bite to eat.
For groups looking to partake in the towns festivities, Tavistock boasts a number of great
events throughout the year. In the summer the town comes alive with music and the fanfare of Tavistock Carnival, whilst in the winter you can look forward to our Dickensian evening. Plus with a number of art market, food festivals and plenty of live music throughout the year, you’re sure to find an event that pique everyone’s interest.
The wide open spaces, stunning landscapes and pretty villages of Dartmoor National Park, on Tavistock’s doorstep, are an obvious attraction for groups, whilst the maritime city of Plymouth is a 40-minute drive away. Groups can visit the nearby Buckland Abbey, once home to Sir Francis Drake, or take a tour around the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and visit the mining heritage attractions of
Morwellham Quay.
