About the Event
The Big Strut, one of the South-West’s best party bands are raising funds for a special little boy, Woody Bear and his family. Last year Woody was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic condition called Deficiency of Adenosine Deaminase 2 (DADA2), there are only about 150 cases worldwide, and currently it has no cure. DADA2 causes vasculitis and bone marrow failure, and Woody has been neutropenic since March 2021, which means he has zero immune system against bacterial infections. Woody is currently in Great Ormond Street Hospital, he has had his Chemotherapy and received his Magic new Stem Cells, and now they wait for them to engraft in his body. Since Woody was admitted to GOSH at the beginning of September, he has been living in isolation, and will stay there for the duration of his treatment. This means that he will be separated from his brothers, friends and family for the duration of his stay in hospital. The family have been told to expect to be in for 6-12 weeks. Once Woody is discharged from the hospital it will still be a long road to recovery and he'll be extremely vulnerable and will continue to live in isolation and not be able to attend things like school for an extra 12 months, until his body has developed a strong enough immune system. We are raising money to help Woody and his family with the financial burdens of having to be out of work for the duration of his treatment, and beyond. They’re currently facing the increased cost of living with half the family in Devon and half the family in London. Once they get home there will be multiple trips required between Devon and London, for the many follow up appointments over the next 12 months.
