When you're visiting or staying in Tavistock, you're on the doorstep of the Tamar Valley, an area rich in beauty and history, possessing some of the finest scenery in the British Isles.

The valley of the River Tamar – and its tributaries, the Tavy that flows through Tavistock, and the Lynher that springs forth on Bodmin Moor in East Cornwall – is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and much of the area forms part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. The valley's diverse terrain ranges from rolling hills and dense woodlands to meandering riverside trails, making it a haven for hikers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts.

One of the highlights of the Tamar Valley is its rich history, evident in the preserved remnants of industrial heritage. The region was once a thriving centre for mining and quarrying during the 19th century. Now, visitors can explore the iconic ruins of engine houses and chimneys, offering a glimpse into the past and the lives of the hardworking locals.

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is also a sanctuary for wildlife and biodiversity. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting various species of birds, including kingfishers and herons, while the woodlands are home to an array of flora and fauna. The valley is also a habitat for otters, adding to the sense of wilderness and wonder.

For those seeking tranquillity, the Tamar Valley provides the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. You can take a leisurely boat trip along the river, savouring the scenic vistas, or explore the charming villages dotted throughout the valley. Each village has its own unique character, with picturesque cottages, welcoming pubs and local artisan shops.

Food lovers will be delighted by the culinary delights on offer in the Tamar Valley. From traditional cream teas to fresh seafood caught from the nearby coast, there is a taste to suit every palate.

Whether you're an adventurer, history buff, nature lover, or someone simply seeking a great cream tea, a visit to the Tamar Valley in Devon promises an unforgettable experience. It's a destination that invites you to connect with nature, immerse yourself in the past, and create lasting memories amid one of England's most captivating landscapes.
