WHITCHURCH DOWN
This area of open common land is situated on the edge of town, accessed via Down Road. Unusually for Dartmoor, it is relatively flat.
This easy walk follows the perimeter of Tavistock’s golf course and offers splendid 360 degree views over the town, across to Cornwall, Dartmoor and down towards Plymouth Sound.
Passing by the Grade II listed Pimple, built by one of the country's most renowned architects, you will also see two medieval crosses during the walk. These are thought to have marked the route between the abbeys of Tavistock and of Buckfast, on the other side of the moor. Pixie's Cross is one of the best preserved and most visually impressive of all medieval wayside crosses on Dartmoor.
The full walk takes about two hours and is just over 4 miles. The beauty of this walk is that you can cut it short at any time and return the way you came.
